A beautiful Derby porcelain plate with extremely eye-catching decoration around the rim of gold acanthus leaves, which set off the superb central flower bouquet in muted colours, thought to be the work of artist John Keys, c1818.
John Keys was apprenticed to Derby in c1809, and was the son of Head Gilder, Samuel Keys.
The central bouquet features roses, a passion flower and an iris, in Keys own style, being "between that of Billingsley and the more florid style which the flower painters afterwards painted", according to John Haslem.
The plate is in good condition, save for some loss to the gilding here and there. Marked with crown, crossed batons, dots and D in red
