A very fine Minton "Pembroke" shape vase, dating to c1835, sumptuously decorated with flowers by ex-Derby artist, known more famously for his painting of fruit, Thomas Steel.
Thomas Steel worked at the Derby factory from approximately 1815, leaving c1828, working briefly for Rockingham before joining the Minton factory in 1832.
The quality of the flower painting has to be seen to be believed! My photos do not do it justice! Please see my photos for a similar vase by Steel from David Manchip's excellent book on "Artists and Craftsmen of the 19th Century Derby China Factory."
The stunning panel of flowers is surrounded by gilt decoration, with gilt urn and scrolls to the reverse. The gorgeous green ground really sets the gilding off.
It has been in my own collection for some time, but now is looking for an appreciative new home where it will be enjoyed "as is" or lovingly restored.
As can be seen, it is missing its handles - the only other damage being a large chip to one corner of the base.
No factory markings.
