An interesting early Derby butter tub, lacking cover, dating to c1753-55.
The tub is of hexagonal shape, decorated on one side with birds in a landscape and on the opposite side with a fine bouquet.  There are smaller sprays to other canted sides of the tub.  The flowers the work of the "Cotton Stem Painter" known as such for his cotton-like, finely painted stems.  Brown line rim.
Unmarked.  The butter tub is in good condition, but there has been fine restoration to one of the undecorated smaller sides and a long hairline crack to the inside base, which does not go through.  Some wear to brown rim.
12 cm long, 9.5cm wide, 6cm deep.
