A superb Chelsea Derby plate, hand decorated with bouquets of flowers by Edward Withers, c1780.
The plate features a Smith's blue band close to the rim, over which is a gilt pattern of leaves and tendrils.  A narrower blue band appears at the centre of the plate, entwined with gilt ivy leaves.
Edward Withers was once called the "finest rose painter in England" and the plate has one large bouquet and two smaller ones in the well of the plate, plus a spray in the centre.  The largest bouquet includes his 'Withers Rose.'
Marked with crown over D in blue, and jn excellent condition.
